How to prepare your perfect Amsterdam Canal Pride 2026 outfit

Canal Pride is on the water, in the sun, and lasts all day. Here is everything you need to know to dress perfectly - and comfortably - for the parade.

Amsterdam Canal Pride is unlike any other Pride event in the world. You're on a boat, or lining the Prinsengracht for hours, in the Dutch summer sun. Comfort and visibility are everything. Here is how we think about putting together your perfect Pride 2026 look.

Start with a base you can move in

The parade runs through the canals for several hours, and the afterparties go even longer. Your outfit needs to work from 10am to midnight. A well-fitted Pride tee is our starting point - soft cotton, bold print, something that tells the world exactly who you are the moment you walk out the door.

Layer with purpose

Amsterdam in late July can be warm, but evenings cool down fast. We recommend a lightweight open overshirt - ideally in a flag colour or a neutral that lets your tee do the talking. Roll the sleeves up, tie it around your waist when the sun is high, pull it back on as the evening breeze picks up off the water.

Accessories are the story

Our community's Pride looks are defined by the details. A rainbow bracelet, a statement necklace, face gems around the eyes. These are the pieces that photograph, that start conversations, that make strangers on the boat turn and smile. Do not skip the accessories - they are where the magic lives.

Face and body

Face paint and glitter are as much a part of Canal Pride as the boats themselves. Our face and body range is designed to last all day - even in heat and near water. A stripe of rainbow across the cheekbone, a gold star by the eye, and you are ready.

Most importantly: dress for you

Pride fashion has one rule - there are no rules. Wear what makes you feel most like yourself. That is the whole point. Our collection runs XS to 4XL because every body deserves to show up fully, visibly, and joyfully. ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ

The history of Pride in Amsterdam - why we march

Amsterdam has been marching for LGBTQ+ rights since 1977. Here is the story of how our city became one of the most important Pride destinations in the world - and why it still matters.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of people line the Prinsengracht to watch the boats go by. But Canal Pride is not just a party. It is the continuation of a movement that began in this city nearly fifty years ago.

The first march, 1977

Amsterdam's first organised LGBTQ+ demonstration took place on the streets in 1977. It was small, it was brave, and it was necessary. At a time when homosexuality had only recently been decriminalised in the Netherlands, showing up visibly was an act of courage. Those who marched then made it possible for us to celebrate now.

Canal Pride is born, 1996

In 1996, Amsterdam introduced something the world had never seen before - a Pride parade on the water. Eighty-plus decorated boats floating through the historic canal ring, watched by half a million people on the banks. It was immediately iconic. It remains unlike any other Pride event on the planet.

Why Amsterdam?

The Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage, in 2001. Amsterdam has long been a city that values freedom, tolerance, and individual expression. But we also know that rights must be protected and celebrated - loudly, visibly, every single year.

Why we still march in 2026

Because visibility matters. Because in too many countries, being LGBTQ+ is still dangerous. Because every young queer person who sees a boat full of proud, joyful people knows that there is a community waiting for them. We march for them. We march for ourselves. We march to say: we are here, we have always been here, and we are not going anywhere. ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ

Our guide to Amsterdam Canal Pride 2026 - everything you need to know

First time at Canal Pride? Been coming for years? Either way, here is our complete guide to making the most of Amsterdam Pride 2026 - from where to stand to what to pack.

Amsterdam Canal Pride 2026 takes place on Saturday 1 August. Here is everything you need to know to have the best day of your summer.

The route

The boat parade departs from Westerdok and travels through the historic canal ring - along the Prinsengracht, past the Anne Frank House, and through the heart of the city. The best viewing spots fill up early, so arrive by 11am if you want a front-row position on the canal banks. The parade typically starts around 12:30 and the last boats arrive mid-afternoon.

What to bring

  • Water - August in Amsterdam is warm and you will be outside for hours
  • Sun protection - sunscreen and a hat if you burn easily
  • Your Pride gear - flags, accessories, face paint, and of course your Amsterdam Pride Essentials tee
  • Cash and card - there are food stalls and vendors throughout the route
  • A portable charger - your phone battery will not survive the day without one

Before and after

Pride week runs from 25 July to 3 August. There are street parties, exhibitions, club nights, and community events across the city all week. Reguliersdwarsstraat and the Zeedijk are the heart of the action. The Pride closing party takes place on Sunday 2 August.

Getting there

Amsterdam is well-connected by train from all major Dutch cities and from Brussels, Paris, and London by Eurostar. The Prinsengracht is a short walk or tram ride from Centraal Station. On the day of the parade, expect the city centre to be very busy - we recommend arriving by public transport.

From our team

We will be there. Our whole team will be at the parade, wearing our gear, cheering from the banks or the boats. If you spot us, say hello. We would genuinely love to meet you. ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ
